Talcum powder is widely known as “baby powder” but also comes in many other forms. It is a cosmetic or toilet preparation consisting of the mineral talc in powdered form, typically perfumed. Talc is made up of various elements including magnesium, silicon and oxygen and is ground to make a powder which is used to absorb moisture.
Regular use of talcum powder may have been the cause of as many as 2,200 cases of the ovarian cancer diagnosed each year. In July 2016, a jury found Johnson & Johnson knew of the cancer risks associated with its products but ailed to warn consumers. Four recent juries have found Johnson & Johnson liable for ovarian cancer linked to talcum powder.
